Alfred and John were born to William Brookes (a railway engine driver) and Louisa (nee Freeborough) along with 10 other siblings-

In 1901 census the family lived at 51 Newby St., Leicester and in 1911 census they lived at 7 Newby St. where Alfred was listed as a hairdressers assistant.

In 1917 John married Evelyn Toon in Leicester and they had one child, Louis, in 1917.

Alfred was enlisted from 19 Garendon St. He is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France (Pier  and Face 14A and 15C).
