In 1891 census the family lived at 108 Cobden Street, Leicester. In 1901 census they were at 85 Warwick Street and Alfred was a stockroom hand at the boot and shoe factory.

In 1911 census his parents were living at 8 Newby Street, Humberstone Row and he was at 66 High Street, Gillingham, Kent working as a shoe shop manager.
Alfred became Private 62929 7th Battalion, London Regiment and was Killed in Action on 23.4.1917. He is on the Arras Memorial, Bay 3.
