Arthur was born in 1891 in Leicester to Frederick Ratcliffe, a hosiery machinist, and Elizabeth (nee Brant).

In 1901 census they were at 30 James St., Blackley, Manchester.
In 1911 census they were back in Leicester at 26 St. Saviour’s Rd. and Frederick had become a fruit salesman. Arthur is listed as a shoe hand clicker.
Arthur enlisted as Private 2619 Leicestershire Regiment but then became Private 200410 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He entered France on 2.3.1915 and Died on 3.5.1917. He is on the Arras Memorial, Pas De Calais, France.
