George was born in 1886 in Leicester to Joseph Barnett, a loco engine fitter and Mary Ann (nee James). They had 12 children:

In 1891 census the family lived at 5 Wale Street, Leicester.
In 1901 census they were at 12 Beal Street and George was a gas fitter.

1910 George married Florence Evelyn Emma Wilson on August 1st at St. Peter’s Church. They had no children.

In 1911 census, Joseph and Mary lived at 20 Chatsworth Street and George and Florence lived at 219 Humberstone Road.

George enlisted aged 30 and became Gunner 80681. Died of wounds 12/4/1918. He is buried at Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery Extension (iv.B.15).
