Charles was born in 1897 in Leicester and was baptised on 8.1.1897 at St. Saviours church. His parents were John Capell Smith, a railway engineer and Mary Ann (nee Foster).

In 1901 census the family lived at 38 Grove Road, Leicester.
In 1911 census they were at 47 Oak Street and Charles was a shoe machine minder.
Charles became Lance Corporal 13015 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was Killed in Action on 1.10.1917, aged 20, and is on the ‘Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
At the time of his death his parents were living at 127 Berners Street, Leicester.
