Ernest was born in 1894 in Leicester to Arthur William Pitts, a shoe machine sewer, and Emma (nee Daniels).

In 1901 census the family lived at 107 Nedham St., Leicester and by 1911 census they had moved to 129 Nedham St. where Ernest, aged 16, is listed as a decorator and house painter.

Ernest enlisted aged 20 and became Lance Corporal 12403 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He went to France on 29.7.1915 and was Killed in Action on 15.7.1916. He is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France (Pier and Face 2C & 3A).
