Ernest was born in 1877 in Leicester to Henry (Harry) James Tingle,a shoe clicker, and Kate (nee Bell).

In 1901 census the family lived at 104 Charnwood St. and in 1911 census they had moved to 23 Sherrard Rd. and Ernest was listed as an erand boy aged 14.
Ernest enlisted aged 17, a shoe hand, and became Private 11405 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He Died of Wounds, aged 19, on 8.2.1916 and is buried at Amara War Cemetery Iraq.
