Fred was born in 1880 in Leicester to William Porter, a printer compositer, and Ellen (nee Richards).

In 1881 census the family lived at 22 Sherard St., Leicester.
1887 William died leaving a pregnant Ellen with 2 young children.
In 1891 census a widowed Ellen lived with 3 children at 130 Charnwood St.
In 1901 census they were at 26 Willow St. and Fred was a shoe trade worker.
5.5.1906 Fred married Maud Bown at St. Matthew’s Church and they went on to have 5 children –

1911 census Fred and his family lived at 47 Main St., Mexborough, Doncaster where Fred was a boot maker at home. Fred’s mother and sister lived at 22 Onslow St., Leicester and worked in the hosiery trade.
Fred enlisted as Private 36892 Leicestershire Regiment but then became Private 33723 1st Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He was Killed in Action on 22.9.1917 and is buried at Derry House Cemetery No.2, Wytschaete, Belgium. He is also commemorated at Welford Rd. Cemetery (Cn.1098).
