Harold was born in 1898 in Leicester to Alfred McDonald, a general labourer and Clara (nee Ridgeway).

In 1901 census the family lived at 63 Ash Street, Leicester. In 1911 census they lived at 11 Mere Road.
Harold joined the army as Private 29678 Sherwood Forresters then became Private 29306 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment (Hussars). He was Killed In Action on 5.10.1917 and is buried at Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, France.
