Herbert Gladwin

There is a record for a Herbert Gladwin Whiteley who was born in1890 in Hunslet. He was baptised on 4.5.1890 at Hunslet Moor, West Yorks. His parents were Herbert, a baker and Elizabeth (ne Wright).

They had 6 children –

In 1891 census the family lived at 3 Aviary Grove, Leeds.
In 1901 census they live at 32 Bengal Street, West Hartlepool and Herbert senior was the foreman for a confectioner.
In 1911 the family lived at King Street, Enderby and Herbert senior is a baker. Herbert junior was a servant baker living at 6 Market Place, Bolsover, Derby.

I think Herbert married Elizabeth Thorell in 1915 in Stamford.

Herbert enlisted as Private 39641 South Staffordshire Regiment. He then became Private 42275 1st Battalion Hertfordshire Regiment and was Killed in Action, aged 27, on 18.9.1918. He is on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France and and also St. Peter’s Church, Leicester.

His address at the time of his death is given as 15, Lumby’s Terrace, Slater Street, Stanford
