Horace was born in 1897 in Leicester to William Goode (shoe tree builder) and Mary Jane (nee Cox). They had 12 children –

In 1901 census the family lived at 131 Wheat St., Leicester.
In 1911 census the family were at 28 Forest Rd. and William was a machine operator at the shoe factory. Horace, however, was an inmate ai Desford Industrial School, aged 13, working as a kitchen boy and part-time school.
Horace became Private 243028 1/5 Leicestershire Regiment and went to France on 30.6.1915. He died on 1.12.1917 in England (27 Frederick St.), aged 20, and was buried at Gilroes cemetery on 8.12.1917. He is also commemorated at St. Stephen’s Church.
