Horace was born in 1893 in Leicester to Horace Ward, a shoe riviter, and Florence Annie (nee Herbert).

In 1901 census the family lived at 30 Northgate St.
By 1911 census Horace and Florence had separated as Horace had been taken to court under the married women’s act for not providing for his family. The NSPCC had been involved so obviously there was a child neglect issue.
Horace senior was listed as living alone at Court 6 Thornton Lane and Florence and the children were at 49 Shenton St.
Horace became Private 20301 6th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was wounded and captured on 21.3.1918 and again on 17.7.1918 and Died, aged 25, on 20.7.1918. He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany (xll F23). He is also commemorated at The Martyrs Church, Leicester.
