Gordon and Lionel (James) were brothers born to Harold Lionel Hoggart Hill, a Grenadier Guard, and Frances Wyndham (nee Quin).

They had 3 children-

In 1901 census the family lived at 31 Imperial Villas, St. Saviours Rd. East. Father was away in the army and mother was a school teacher. Living with them were the boy’s Grandmother, Great Grandmother and 2 Great Aunts.
In 1911 census the boys were living at 3 St. Saviours Rd. East with their mother and Grandmother. Their father was in South Africa where he died. Lionel was a clerk in a boot factory.
Their mother died in 1913, aged 48.

Lionel enlisted on 1.9.1914 as Private 15537 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was later transferred as Private 37129 Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales). He died on 4.6.1917 and is buried in the Basra War Cemetery-J. L. H. Hill grave location iv.L.20. He is also on the St. Peter’s Church memorial.

Gordon enlisted as Private 33521 Leicestershire Regiment and later became Private 340829 Northumberland Fusiliers. He was Killed in Action on 28.5.1918 and is on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.
