Robert was born in 1885 in Lucknow, India to James Brown, a waterworks manager, and Mary Ellen (nee Radford). They returned to England between 1892-94 according to the birth place of their children. The 1911 census states they had 14 children but as they had lived in India for a number of years I cannot trace them. There are 5 appear on British census records –

In the 1901 census the family were living at 4 Joseph St. and Robert is
listed as a club worker.
In 1906 Robert married Amy Elizabeth Danell and they had 3 children –

In the 1911 census the family lived at 66 Asylum St. and Robert is a plumbers labourer at the corporation waterworks. This census tells a sad story – by 1911 Amy had given birth to 4 children, 1 stillborn and 2 had died before the 1911 census.
Robert became Corporal 17477 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and died on 4.11.1918 aged 33. He is buried at Beirut British War Cemetery, Lebanon.
