Gateway School 1932-36. Son of Arthur and Lilian Summerfield.

Aircraftman Summerfield was one of the crew of a Lockheed Hudson N7289 that took off from RAF Thornaby at 12:45 hours on the 15th April 1940. The aircraft, on an operation over the Western Skagerrak between Denmark and Norway, was attacked and shot down at 15:50 hours by a German fighter, piloted by Unteroffizier Helmut Enerlein. The crew of four were killed. Aircraftman Summerfield is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Panel 27.

220 Squadron was part of No. 18 Group, RAF Coastal Command.
