Tom was born in 1892 in Leicester to James Goddard, a rotary glove hand, and Annie (nee Allen). They had 7 children –

In the first quarter of 1899, when Tom was 8 years old, his mother died. Arthur was also born in the same quarter so there is probably a connection.

In 1900 James married his second wife Mary (nee Large). 1901 census the family lived at 39 Cecil Rd., Leicester.
1911 census they lived at 29 Garendon St. and Tom is listed as a shoe hand.

Tom became Private 27329 West Yorks regiment and gave his address as 17 Cromford St., Leicester. He was Killed in Action on 12.5.1917 aged 24 and is on the Arras Memorial in France.
