Walter was born in 1882 to Oscar Barton, a shoe trade foreman, and Martha (nee Griffin). He was one of twelve children –

In 1901 census the family lived at Headington Villa, 43 Green Lane Rd., Leicester.

On 9.12.1909 Walter married Annie Hutchinson at St. Luke’s Church and they had a daughter, Grace Annie, in 1910. They lived at 29 Arnold St., Leicester and Walter was a porter at the boot factory.

He enlisted as Private 37211 7th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment.
He was Killed In Action on 4.2.1918, aged 35,and is buried at Philosophe British Cemetery (Grave m.B.20).

When Walter died his wife lived at 97 Charnwood Street Walter’s photograph is in Leicester Mercury 13.9.1918 Pg 3.
