Walter was born in 1887 in Leicester to William Hughes, a shoe finisher and Sarah A (nee Withers).

They had 9 children and adopted another-

Elizabeth Broughton 1900 adopted

In 1891 census the family lived at 25 London St., Leicester and by 1901 census they had moved to no.16.

In 1908 Walter married Eliza Croxtall at St. Saviour’s Church and they went on to have 3 children -Nellie Winifred 1909

1909 William Hughes died aged 63.
In 1911 census Sarah was a widow still living at 16 London St. There is no 1911 census for Walter and his family.

Walter became Private 23992 7th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and Died of Wounds, aged 30, on 10.10.1917. He is buried at Longuenesse Souvenir Cemetery, France.
