William was born in 1878 to Thomas Bromley, a bricklayers labourer, and Mary (nee Ward). They had 6 known children –

In 1881 census the family were lodging at 205 Syston St., Leicester.

In 1887, when William was 9, his mother Mary died leaving his father, Thomas, with a young family.

In 1891 census the family were living at 37 Spinney Hill Rd., Leicester. Thomas is a widower working as a telegraph labourer.

In 1897 Thomas married his second wife, Florence Newham, and had 4 further children –

In 1901 census the family were living at 22 Newby St., Leicester and William was working as a heel builder in the shoe factory.

On 21.12.1901 William married Florence Eyden at St. Saviour’s Church and they had 4 children –

Baby Florence Lilian died, a few months old, in 1908 and her mother died shortley after her birth (maybe complications of childbirth).On 26.11.1910 William married his second wife, Magdelene Thompson, at St. Saviour’s Church and they had one daughter,Magdelene, in 1912.
In 1911 census William lived at 16 Newby St. and worked as a heel fitter.

William enlisted as 10/18324 Leicestershire Regiment and was later promoted to Corporal 4966 in the Machine Gun Corps. 62n d Company. He Died of Wounds on 15.7.1916 in France and Flanders and is buried at Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, (plot ll.C.24).

He was awarded the Military Medal, aged 39.
