William was born in 1891 in Leicester and baptised on 22.9.1891 at St. Mary de Castro. His parents were William John Burbage, a wood carter and Priscilla (nee Starmer). He was one of 6 children –

In 1901 census the family lived at la Mill Lane, Leicester.
In 1911 census they lived at 52 Stanley St. where William is listed as a milkman and his father is a corporation labourer.

When William enlisted it was from 8 Beaumont Rd. employed as a baker’s van man.
He joined the South Staffordshire Regiment as Private 24194 and then moved as Private 40534 to 7t h Battalion Norfolk Regiment. He was Killed in Action on 20.3.1917 and is buried at Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.

When William died his wife lived at 35 Spalding Street. William’s photograph is in Illustrated Chronicle 5.5.1917.
