William was born in 1895 in Leicester to Jeremiah Vernon, an iron foundry worker, and Mary Ann (nee Brumwell).

In 1901 census the family lived at 33 Percival Street and in 1911 census they were at 13 Prospect Road where William is listed as a shoe clicker.
William became Private 11730 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was Killed in Action on 15.6.1916. He is on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France and also commemorated at St. Barnabas’s Church.
