William was born in 1896 in Leicester and baptised on 25.10.1896 at St. Barnabas’ Church Leicester. His parents were Alfred Arthur West, a street mason’s labourer, and Martha Jane (nee Mason).

In 1901 census the family lived at 14 Dorothy Rd., Leicester and Alfred was listed as a shoe pressman.
In 1911 census they were at the same address and William was a boot and shoe trainee.
William became Private 13020 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was Killed In Action on 24.9.1918. He is on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
