George was the third child of Walter Munday who was an Agricultural Labourer from Luton. Walter married Annie Stevens in 1884 in Adstock in Buckinghamshire where their first three children were born, Alfred John born in 1885, Cicely Kate, born 1887 and Walter George born in 1889. The family later moved to Toft and Lound in Lincolnshire.
The 1901 Census shows the family were living at Gilliver Lane in Leicester, oldest son Alfred was
16 and working as a Domestic Gardner, Kate at the age of 14 was working as a Boot Machinist, George was 12. Four more siblings had been born. William born in 1894, Frederick in 1893, Edith in 1895 and Jessie born in Leicester in 1901. Also staying with them was Annie’s mother also called Ann, who was a widow.
By 1911 the family had moved to 15 Knighton Fields Road East. George had left home and at the age of 22 he was a Footman for Mr & Mrs Wartnaby, who were listed as being ‘Gentry’ in the Directories of Leicester and lived at Oakland House on London Road. As well as a Footman they also had a Cook and a Housemaid working for them.
George was listed as Wounded and Missing on the Casualty list dated 15/1/1917. However, he had been Killed in Action on 12/8/1916. He is buried at Serre Road Cemetery no 2, Beaumont-Hamel and Hebuterne in France, which by the end of the war contained 475 graves.
A month after George was killed his brother Frederick who was a Private in the Leicestershire Regiment was discharged from the Army on 2/9/1916 following a Gun Shot Wound to his left forearm. In 1921 he joined the Territorial Force. He married Jessica Violet Thornhill in 1921 and died in 1950.
Another brother was Killed in Action, William died on 13/12/1917. He is commemorated at Arras Memorial, Pas De Calais in France. The memorial lists nearly 35,000 soldiers of the British, South African and New Zealand forces with no known grave, most of which were killed in the Battle of Arras between 9/4/1917 and 16/5/1917.
